What is play therapy?

In play therapy, a trained therapist provides a safe and supportive environment with various toys, games, and art materials. Children are encouraged to play freely and express themselves through these activities. The therapist observes and may sometimes join in the play, using it as a tool to understand the child’s thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

The goal of play therapy is to help children process difficult emotions, improve communication and social skills, enhance self-esteem, and find healthier ways to cope with challenges. It is often used to address issues such as behavioral problems, trauma, anxiety, grief, and family disruptions.

While play therapy is most commonly associated with children, variations of this approach can also be adapted for adolescents and even adults, recognizing that play and creative expression can be powerful tools for therapy across the lifespan.
